Graphics

  • This screen shot from quantum of solace shows a bullet flying across the screen, with the writers names
  • In our opening, we wanted to incorporate this into the shot of our posh man walking in a rushed manor on a pavement
  • i am keen on making this work as it will prove to be a very aesthetically pleasing opening scene

  • An alternative to the bullet, we looked at the opening to the school of rock
  • This is a particularly interesting opening as the graphics are all included in the set and the costume of some
  • We especially like this because we like the use of the background graphics
  • The layout of the opening scene is a simple idea, which makes it doable for us to recreate and change to make our own
  • Unlike the bullet, this is more fluid and will make sense in the scene so at the moment is more probable

  • We chose this font because it is basic but it also has an urban look
  • The font we chose is aesthetically pleasing and it also fluidly fits in with the theme of an urban gang thriller
  • We are especially keen on having a simple font, in bold and in capital letters

  • However, it would be more effective to add in a graphic design into our title, as it would make our title more graphically interesting and also would relate more to the opening

  • In our opening we are wanting to incorporate our graphics in the fore ground of the opening whilst our character is walking down the street e.g. The Sopranos

Ident Ideas

One of our first ident names we came up with was "Johnson Productions" as Molly and I, coninsidently have the surname Johnson, this seemed fitting.
We created the Ident in Motion, and we particularly liked the spherical movement of the animation
I created another, under the title "solar edge". I liked the way that the movement of the circles make the overall effect more professional.

Sound

Foley Sound
All the Foley sounds in the production me and Joe will record ourselves using a directional mic and a digital audio recorder. These sounds will include footsteps, atmospheric sounds of cars and sirens, the impact of punches ect.. We will record these sounds separately from the filming.

Dialogue
No script has been written yet however there will be a small amount of dialogue in our production.

Non Diegetic Sound
I will compose an atmospheric, tense piece of music for my production which will develop a rhythmical pattern as the scene develops to match the tone of the scene. In the action sequence at the end of the scene, the music will change from atmospheric to a more light background drum and bass track I will compose to match the fast paced tone of the production.

An example of the atmospheric music I hope to produce is
This track consist of soft minor chords with a reverb effect and is a perfect example of the opening of the track I hope to produce. I will use similar synthesisers as used in this track as well the crackling effect. I believe this will provide perfect atmospheric, background music for the beginning of the production.

Location

  •        The Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge, London, Is an ideal location for our film to be open with
  •        The Hotel is Ideal because the location of our production is set in an Urban area, therefore it is important to maintain the appearance of wealth with the use of flashy buildings such as the hotel, despite the dark backstreets the rest of our production will be filmed in.
  • The hotel is also beneficial as it is in suiting with our character being wealthy and important. The fact that he is dressed in what appears to be expensive clothing and he is exiting a wealthy buildings immediately alerts the audience that this character comes from wealth.
  • The hotel is also suiting as it makes the robber characters appear out of place due to their informal, scruffy appearance. This adds to ominous. suspicious tone of the characters I hope to portray, as their appearance compared to the appearance of the suited man and the building is a large contrast.

Style and Tone

Our thriller is set in an urban setting on the streets of London.
Our plan is to take advantage of London's flashy buildings and dark streets to create a dark, yet fast paced tone, similar to the introduction of welcome to the punch. Our lighting will mainly consist of streetlights as we will be shooting at night, making it easier to incorporate darkness and a general dreary
atmosphere to our introduction to create a sense of uneasiness in our viewers, we will possibly use a blueish filter to create a modern feeling in the dark backstreets.  The colours will mainly be grey and black with a large amount shadows to build tension as one character follows the other - We hope to incorporate lots of examples of chiaroscuro to create an edgy feel in the production. We also plan to incorporate shots of large flashy buildings to contrast the dark streets our characters are walking on to further set the tone of the production as dark and ominous.

A scene similar to our action scene would be the armoured truck robbery scene from Heat. This scene captures the fluidity of the robbers we hope to produce and maintains the appearance of organised crime with the use of the costumes. Our action scene will be similar to this in the sense that we hope to use some of the techniques used to create a similar chaotic environment with the use of fast cuts, many different angles and cross cutting to different characters roles within the robbery.

-BA

Costumes & Props

For our first character, we need a relatively old looking male wearing a suit, well presented with slick back hair - similar to Christian Bale in American Psycho - holding a briefcase, possibly smoking a cigaret. Our robbers will be wearing black outfits, black gloves, hoods and the same masks so that they appear organised - similar to the robbers in The Dark Knight Rises. We will have to use fake blood for a character after the fight sequence and the police badge as a plot development.

Our robbers will be dressed similar to the robbers from Heat.. as well as their costumes, we hope that our characters will move similar to these robbers and adopt their general criminal appearance. Whilst their masks and clothing make them appear frightening and criminal, their matching masks and
costumes make them appear organised and structured. This is the type of criminal I hope to portray in my production.

For our beaten up character at the end, we will use fake blood to make him appear as though he is severely bleeding. A small amount of make up may be used to make it appear realistic, although we
will avoid showing close ups of the characters face to avoid the appearance of being unrealistic. We hope to portray this character similar to Tyler Durden from Fight Club after receiving a beating.

VOXPOPS

This gave us more of an in depth idea of how our audience will respond to our film. Seeing as this is our target audience, their responses to our questions will help us make our film so that their response to our actual film is positive. These interviews also helped us understand our audience better… their preferences, their dislikes ect… It also helped us understand that our audience would be quite small as not many of our subjects have watched or were even aware of what an independent film is.

Ignore the last 2 minutes of darkness…

Media Survey Review

  • This question showed us that there was a higher percentage of males that took this survey
  • However another alternative reason is because i am male and my friends would be more likely to help me out in a situation such as a media survey

  •  The answers from this question show us that the majority of people interested in watching our film would be in the age group of 15 and 25
  • This gave us an idea of what our target audience is

  • This Question didn't really help us with our film, however it showed us how frequent our age group watches movies, giving us an idea of how likely they are to watch ours

  • Similar to the above, this showed us how successful our film would be
  • This shows that our target audience would go to the cinema to watch our film

  • These answers are surprising as it turned out that the majority of our target audience will watch our film online

  • this question gave us an idea of what sort of film genre we want to use when making our film

  • Again, this gave us certain aspects of thrillers that we want to use when it comes to our film

  • This gives us an idea on what we should be basing our movies around. Seeing as our target audience has seen these movies, we should consider the camera work and plot development used in these movies.

  • This shows our target audience would be interested in our film and people will watch, giving us the confidence to make it.

Pre Production Proposal

Audience

Camera cuts to an over the shoulder shot of Guy 2 typing on his phone ‘2 minutes’. Camera cuts to another 2 men walking (Guys 3+4). One receives the text and tells the other ‘2 minutes’. They exchange a small amount of nervous dialogue to express their uneasiness.  Camera cuts to a few more shots of Guy 2 following Guy 1. Extreme close ups of Guy 1s face are shown – beads of sweat dripping – he is nervous. Guy 2 sends another text ’20 seconds’. Camera cuts to Guys 3+4 putting on their hoods. Guy 1 walks into an ally way, swiftly followed by guy 2 the camera is now shaky and tracks guy 2 over the shoulder. The camera is now constantly moving and changing angles as guys 2,3 and 4 surround guy 1 in a flurry of movement. Guy 1 is shown through the legs of the other 3 getting kicked. A woman sees this and is shown calling the police. After a short amount of time, the 3 men leave with the briefcase. Guy 1 lays on the ground covered in blood and shouts after them ‘wait! The Package - Group Work - 1st Task

This assignment was given to me and 3 other students - the objective being to make a short film to do with a package. In hindsight, I would put more input in the planning of the production so that when the plot is decided, it is something I am interested in causing less conflict within the group on what we should film next. Working in a group is effective if everyone in the group agrees on what everyone is saying, which was not the case to start with, however as the production progressed, the plot of the production became irrelevant and the group worked well on using effective camera angles and smooth transitions whilst editing. The editing part of the process was effective as a group as there was little disagreement and we produced the best we could with what little shots we had - next time, do more shots - this will make editing easier.

Analysis to the introduction of Iron Man

-

The film opens with a wide establishing shot of the environment which appears to be dry and sandy yet snowy in the mountains, telling us this section of the movie is in a foreign country. In the distance, several trucks are speeding down the dirt path leaving clouds of smoke behind them. The camera angle then changes to the same level as what appears to be army trucks as they drive towards the camera. Upbeat music is also introduced, making the army's purpose in this foreign country appear aggressive, as the trucks are armed with men at the turrets. The camera angle then changes to a low angle, showing the trucks pass by with a sense of authority, and then cuts to a vehicle mounted shot, following a truck closely, showing the man at the turret gun looking aware, already building tension as the audience doesn't know what to expect.

The camera then changes to inside the truck, where an unsteady camera shows several soldiers looking around awkwardly at each other. The camera lense pulls in and out of focus on Downey’s glass of scotch and a young soldier, almost as if to compare the two. We are then introduced to the owner of the glass of scotch, a sharply dressed man looking out of place amongst the soldiers, however clearly the most authoritative character as it becomes clear that he is the reason for the soldiers’ shifty eyes. The unsteadiness of the camera allows the audience to feel as though they are in the truck with the soldiers, the constant changing of the camera angles to show close ups of several of the soldiers establishes a sense of intimacy with them. There is also no lighting coming from within the truck, the key lighting is outdoors which creates a gloomy environment inside the truck.

The focus is still on the driver of the truck when the truck in front of them explodes, making it seem more shocking. The music immediately stops and the comical feel of the movie disappears and it becomes a thriller. The camera becomes even more unsteady as tension levels rise within the truck, the soldiers shouting and the sound of gunshots also build the tension. The camera angle changes to outside the truck, a much sunnier environment where the woman exiting her vehicle is shot, a shock to the audience as we had just been introduced to her character.

In order to create a sense of chaos and helplessness for Downey’s character, the camera is constantly moving and changing angles to show soldiers dying around him. He shouts ‘give me a gun!’ which is met with the response ‘stay in the car’, to portray Downey to be completely helpless. Downey then runs through several explosions and when face to face with a bomb with his name on it, the camera reverses several times to express his shock and disbelief. After the bomb goes off and Downey is lying helplessly in the dirt, he reveals his wound to the audience as the camera zooms out, much like his consciousness is leaving his body.

Analysis of introduction to movies

Collateral

-The film begins with an open frame, showing Tom Cruise amidst a crowd of regular people with the camera focus on Cruise. This already signifies that the audience should be paying attention to him, as he walks through the crowd in slow motion which builds the suspension. The camera then changes to show Jason Statham, like Cruise, walking through a crowd of people in regular speed however the camera pulls in and out of focus which blends Statham in with the crowd. The camera then goes to a close up of Cruises face as he slowly walks towards the camera to create a sense of mystery around his character. The camera then goes to a close up of Statham's brief case as he drops it on the ground, so that the audience knows the brief case will be an important theme in the movie. The sound of the case is also edited to sound louder to further draw attention. The camera then goes to an extreme close up of the side of Cruise's face, to make it feel as though the audience is walking right behind him. The scene changes to a montage of a taxi station, which establishes the flavour of the environment. Jamie Foxx is then introduced as the camera tilts over him, doing a crossword, he is shown to be an anomaly in his environment filled with people fixing cars and chatting. He then steps into his taxi and the setting becomes a closed frame, as the camera changes to an extreme close up to establish intimacy with Foxx's character.

The Dark Knight

-The scene opens with a crane dolly to show the environment. A man is shown standing with a clown face, the camera pans to a close up of the mask, showing this clown is more important than the others. As the 2 clowns set up for their zipline onto the banks roof, the key light is from the outdoors, making them appear as silhouettes, building suspension around their role in the robbery. The camera is constantly changing from clown to clown to show each robbers role in the robbery, which makes it feel fast paced and tense. The camera is unsteady as it follows the robbers into the bank with a point of view shot, making it feel as though the audience is part of the robbery. The constant camera reverse shows the type of  relationships between the robbers. Meanwhile on the roof, the camera focuses on the clown in front of the other, which adds to the shock when the clown behind him shoots him in the back.

Drive

-The scene begins with an aerial shot of a dark city lit by lights. Ryan Gosling's name then appears on the screen in pink, 80's disco themed writing, the song in the background also has an 80's vibe to it. The camera then cuts to a shot of Ryan Gosling sitting in his car from below, with low key lighting, only showing the front section of his face and nothing else. The camera then changes to a close up of the side of Gosling's face as he drives, the only lighting coming from the street lights, but with a blue tint to establish a mellow mood. As the camera switches around the car, only portions of Gosling's face is shown which adds a sense of mystery to the character. The setting is a closed frame, inside Gosling's car, very stylised. The camera then changes to an aerial shot and zooms out as we lose Gosling's car amongst the many others on the road. As Gosling steps out the car, the camera follows him into the elevator, only showing the back of his white jacket with a gold scorpion on the back. This raises questions about his character. Was he in a bikers gang? What is the significance of the scorpion? The door opens to his apartment, the back lighting making him appear as a silhouette, again adding to this characters mystery.
